Product Spotlight: Brownells MI SP Handguards
Introduction to SP Handguards
Hi everyone, Caleb from Brownells here! Today, we’re diving into the Brownells SP Handguards, designed by Midwest Industries specifically for suppressor integration. These handguards are versatile, lightweight, and perfect for those looking to create a compact, sleek firearm build. Let’s take a closer look at what makes these handguards special.
Designed for Suppressors: Dead Air Sandman K Example
The "SP" in SP Handguards stands for Suppressor-Ready, and these handguards are engineered to fit over suppressors seamlessly. For today’s demonstration, I’ve mounted a Dead Air Sandman K on this setup. The handguard provides just enough clearance to tuck the suppressor underneath, creating a streamlined and compact design.
This particular configuration uses the 12.625-inch handguard, which works great for short-barreled firearms or setups where you want extra rail space while accommodating your suppressor.
Handguard Length Options (4.7", 9", 12.625")
The SP Handguards come in three lengths to suit a variety of builds:
- 4.7 inches: Ideal for ultra-compact setups.
- 9 inches: A versatile option for most configurations.
- 12.625 inches: Perfect for longer barrels or maximum rail space.
No matter what barrel and suppressor combo you’re using, there’s an SP Handguard to match your needs. Even the longest option, at 12.625 inches, is compact enough to maintain a PDW-style build with ease.
M-LOK Slots and Full-Length Picatinny Rail
These handguards are equipped with M-LOK slots at multiple positions—3, 6, 9 o’clock, and even 45-degree angles. The top features a full-length Picatinny rail, making it easy to mount optics, lights, and other accessories. Whether you’re going for a tactical build or a minimalist setup, the SP Handguards offer excellent mounting flexibility.
Suppressor Diameter and Handguard Compatibility (1.67" ID)
One of the most important features of the SP Handguards is their 1.67-inch inside diameter. This measurement accommodates most suppressors and muzzle devices, ensuring a snug yet functional fit. If you’re unsure whether your suppressor will fit, feel free to leave a comment, and we’ll help you confirm compatibility.
For example, in today’s demo, the Dead Air Sandman K fits perfectly, but using a different mount like the Xeno Mount could make it even more compact.
Mounting and Barrel Nut Design
The SP Handguards use the same robust mounting system as other Midwest Industries products, making installation straightforward and reliable. The beefy barrel nut ensures a secure fit and is compatible with most AR wrenches. However, unlike some other Midwest barrel nuts, this one needs to be indexed properly during installation.
Caleb removes the handguard to demonstrate the mounting system, showing the sturdy attachment screws and anti-slip design. This ensures the handguard stays in place, even during heavy use.
Installation Notes and Tips
While the installation process is simple, it’s always a good idea to double-check your tools and ensure everything is properly aligned. Midwest Industries has excellent resources on handguard installation, but if you’d like a dedicated install video for the SP Handguards, just let us know in the comments!
For those new to AR builds, remember to take extra care when installing M-LOK accessories to avoid scratching your suppressor or barrel during assembly.
